Interior design tips for small spaces

Interior design

Interior design can make a house into a home. However, when it comes to small spaces, interior designing can be a little difficult- with the conventional methods, that is. There are several ways you can make the interiors of your home look and feel beautiful and spacious, even when you don’t have a lot of space! Just follow our tips below!

Increase the floor area

One of the easiest ways to make your place look bigger and spacious is by increasing your floor area. This can easily be done by removing unnecessary furniture and décor items. One easy way to use this method is by getting your TV wall mounted and getting rid of your TV unit. This will not only make your space look chic and modern but also reduce the amount of clutter and visible chords (which can destroy any good interior design). However, it is important to note that you cant wall mount your TV on any wall- it needs to have studs in it. If it’s drywall, your TV has a chance of falling and destroying your wall. It’s always better to seek out professional advice when getting your TV wall mounted. You can click here for free advice and site inspection.

Daylight

One of the easiest and most impactful ways of making your space look bigger and brighter is by increasing the amount of daylight you receive in your rooms. This can be done by increasing the size of windows so that your space looks open and fresh. You can also add skylights if your room does not face south or has difficulty getting good sun. Skylights ensure that your rooms get the mid-day, overhead sunlight every day. Moreover, it has also been found that the amount of sunlight you receive affects your mood. This means the more sun that enters your room, the happier you will be and the better you will feel. Try to increase your daylight consumption by adding a balcony to your house, if possible, or getting a window seat.

No angled furniture

Angled furniture, specially angled chairs and tables in your interior design can take up more space and make your room look smaller and more closed off. Rather, opt for non-angled furniture with straight legs so that it does not take up too much space. Another thing to consider is to not include furniture that has a lot of height. This blocks the view of what’s behind it and makes the space feel limited to where the furniture piece is. Instead use furniture that is smaller in the height department- this means chairs with smaller headboards and beds with either painted on headboards or a small one that does not occupy the entire wall area.

Vertical storage

When it comes to smaller places, storage is the key for interior design. Not only is it extremely important, but often people living in smaller spaces don’t get a lot. There are two main ways you can increase the storage in your place. The first one is by utilising your vertical storage. This means making more floating shelves, metal shelving unit or cabinets on the walls.  If they are open, the space would look bigger, whereas, if you have a closed cabinet, it can make the space look smaller. Built-in open shelving can also be used to make your place look bigger while simultaneously having storage. If you put shelves higher up on the walls, it may make your space look claustrophobic, so try to go for lower shelving.

Convertible furniture

The best way to save space and make the most of your small rooms is by using convertible furniture. This refers to furniture that can be converted into bigger pieces or can be stored away when not in use. Sofa beds are a perfect example of these kinds of furniture pieces. If you live in a studio, a couch bed will fit perfectly. You can convert it into a bed at night and when not in use, turn it into a couch to give you more room around the place. Also, consider extendable tables. You can easily extend them for guests when required and when not in use, just store the extensions away. Usually, these tables are also foldable, hence saving on storage space.

Storage- in the furniture

One of the best things you can introduce when interior designing your small space is furniture that has built-in storage in it. This can refer to furniture pieces like an ottoman that can be used as a footrest but also can store things in it. Similarly, beds with under bed storage are a necessity for smaller bedrooms. By disguising décor and furniture as storage spaces, not only do you make more room, but also reduce the clutter around your place. This will give you more room to move around. Consider getting more furniture and storage items.
