The Climate Mobilization Act passed in New York City requires large buildings with more than 25,000 square feet to reduce carbon emissions by 40 percent by 2030 and 80 percent by 2050.
The legislation has strict requirements for emissions per square foot and will result in heavy fines for those that do not meet them. The law goes into effect in 2024 and has a range of exemptions for small and medium buildings.
The City of New York has the strictest building emission regulation in the world. This Local Law 97 is the most stringent, and it incorporates recommendations from the 80×50 Buildings Partnership, also includes a provision for carbon trading between buildings, as well as future refinement through advisory boards.
